25 November 2001

The 25th of November is one day that I will never forget, today was the day I lost someone really special in 2001.
She was the most beautiful person I have known in my life and she will always have a place in my heart.
With a smile that would brighten any room and make anyone that was blessed to know her feel so alive.
Oneday we will meet again
 A true angel

All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything.
Forever here

The Wooden Sky

They came all the way from town to see us
And I know how you’d hate to let them down
But I’ve been thinking about the times since they saved us
And wondering why you ever stuck around
You were born a fair child of the valley
Low times felt you were tethered to the ground

You’re not a stone
You’re not a stone

I came to know the names of all my neighbours
Made a home in a valley of my own
And I took a night the audience were strangers
Though not one could ever calm me down

But I felt alone
I felt alone
Just flesh and bone
Just flesh and bone

And I came home to find you at my table
Said the worries that had plagued you now were few
And I’d been wondering if I had the strength to face it
Son if I found mercy surely you can too

But you’re not a stone
You’re not a stone
You’re not a stone
Just flesh and bone
Just flesh and bone

And now you hold the hand of one who named you
Turned to me and said you must make these words your own

Tonight I acted like dick to one of my oldest mates
So so sorry Stu for being a douche - Love you man

Lets keep this quiet

Hearts get broken and we move along in search of someone or something new
The swell is on the way and I am heading back to the coast on friday with my brother.
Reyce has to get some parts for his Landy and I need to pick some new boards from Graham Smith- stoked is a understatement

Let the adventure begin

Just be nice

My body yearns for some liquid salt

So I am currently in Dundee, which is a small country town, 3 hours north of the golden mile and the nearest surf spot. A little country time is good for the soul, makes you really appreciate the surf when you don't have it.

So next week this time I will be leaving for Coffee Bay Transkei, I am going to teach surfing at Sugrloaf for 2 months. I can not wait to see the beauty of the Xhosa land and surf some cracker beach and point breaks.

The Surfer

The Surfer

A funny thing happens when you’re paddling about on the ocean,
the spray on your face and the sun in your eye.
Reading the current,
you scan the immediate horizon and feel the ceaseless pulse and surge of tidal energy
beneath and all around you.
You are already dancing with it,
locking into its rhythm.

Van Island Canada

Some of the sticks I ride

You follow the drift to the point in the cycle
where the energy transforms,
spending itself.
Drawing you in.
Fingertips alert to every subtle tug and pull of the current,
you map the submarine geometry
of each shifting shadow with your mind’s eye
till,
out beyond the foam,
the surface tension begins to yield
to the depths from whence it rises.

You sit up,
senses tuned,
legs dangling like baited hooks as,
away on the horizon,
peaks merge and solidify,
vanish,
then reappear.

Then,
gently, at first,
the sea around you begins to stir,
electrified.
Out in the middle distance,
long valleys appear,
and ridges,
mustering now into uniform battalions
of steadily advancing lines.

All before the front rank,
the surface ripples stretch taut,
then are consumed by the oncoming surge.
Head down, you trace their arc,
striking hard for the highest point,
looming now like long-sunken battlements from some ancient civilisation,
crumbling and precarious above you.

Time slips a gear as you begin the final ascent and the land,
and the life you lead there,
with all its doubts and misgivings,
disappears.

Everything is at once obvious:
the motion of the clouds,
the phases of the moon,
the very fragility of human existence…
And yet:
what giants men can be!
You are a king,
as you turn and launch yourself,
over the edge of reason,
into free-fall…

Into the void.

What happens after that,
in those eternal short split seconds,
is an attempt to realise an idea -
THE idea -
that surfing represents to you.
That’s the art.

Devoid of meaning or wider social purpose,
surfing is a fleeting dance with life –
the whole idea of life.
In that void,
for those few brief,
intoxicating moments,
reality is suspended and faith is restored.

You are taking the universe’s pulse,
and it is taking yours,
and all possibilities exist at once.

You are alive.

Here's to now

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

Actually, I was thinking
Said everything out loud
'Cause apricot seeds carry arsenic
That we don’t worry about

Sitting on your doorstep
Waiting for you to come home or come out
Well apple seeds have cyanide
That we don’t care about

So here’s to now
Here’s to now

Buildings built sturdy
Rolled up and every time
And as bees get aged and the bellies get to sag
Well the people fall right out

Pride is really falling
I’m proud that I’m not proud
And as the people get aged and the bellies get sagged
Well their instincts all fall out

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

The bus boy's younger brother
When he drinks he talks too much
He seemed normal to me
But at quarter to three
Well I could see he was a little bit touched

Actually, I was thinking
Said everything out loud
'Cause apricot seeds carry arsenic
That we don’t care about

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

Actually, I was thinking
Said everything out loud
Well actually I was thinking
So here’s to right now
Here’s to right now

Here’s to now
Here’s to now

Here’s to now

Life on a healthy path

Jake Stewart is one of my many talented cousins, he rips on a skate and styles in the liquid salt.
I have been so fortunate to spend the last few months in Umdloti Beach with Jake and his family.
Been blessed with mad chow, great South African hospitality and perfect surf.
Jake and I have been on some epic missions, we have been working hard on our fitness, a healthy lifestyle is the only way you can rip in the water.
"Healthy body is a healthy mind" as my mom always says.
We have been surfing +- 3 hours a day, skating, running km's on the beach and doing endless push-ups and sit-ups.
I have seen his surfing jump some levels over the past few months, he really has the most incredible style.
If you read this Jake- keep focused china, anything in life is possible with a dream!

So I am on a new chapter for a month, I have moved to Salt Rock to spend some time with my father and his family. Salt Rock is just North of Umdloti along the East Coast of KZN.

I will spend a month here, then I head to Dundee for a few weeks, I have a lot of canoe training to do, before the Dusi and Non-Stop Dusi. I am off to Mozambique for a few weeks for surf and summer fun, after the Dundee mission.
